Mary Skelter Finale Limited Edition (PS4)
I loved all the extras, but I have to knock off one star because it came with the book case dented, and the plastic cover for it split. It wasn’t a deal breaker, but if I was a serious collector, it certainly would be, especially for a hundred bucks.

Mary Skelter Finale on Switch
First, the goodies it came with. I LOVE them! They aren't perfect, but they do fill me with glee. The artbook is a bit disappointing. When you say art, I expect art. NOT half of the already short book to be filled with same sounding interviews. The character profiles are nice, but they don't show any of their alternate costumes or forms, just their normal attire stance. Boring. The rest are rough drafts of enemies and new characters, but very few. Not even colored.
The music CD, however, is very good. And you get 3 of them; one for each game! I love listening to them while I work, cook, or am just relaxing. The only downside is they don't have any opening or credits songs. Just instrumental.
The best thing that came with it was by far the 3 novels. I don't read books very often, if at all, but I absolutely adored these! The art is amazing, the writing is fun, and they give insight on events that take place before the games begin. Mary Skelter Finale does come with the first two novels digitally, but the third only exists as a solid book. Just for that, I'm so glad I got this!
Now, the game review. If you had asked me "Would you play this again?" after the first game, my answer would be "no." After the second, "10 times over with no complaint." But, with this third and final game, I can happily say I would go through all 3 again!
Mary Skelter Finale was clearly made for those who had played the first two games. And, while there is the option to read ALL the events of the first two, I don't recommend it. They aren't voiced and playing the games is well worth it. If not, then Finale isn't for you.
Gameplay wise, this is the most balanced of the three games. I played on Normal difficulty (the other options being Easy or Fear) and never felt like I was at a huge disadvantage nor was I ever in a position I felt unbeatable. The gimmick of switching between teams to traverse through the labyrinths was actually really enjoyable and offered me a chance to play with all the characters simultaneously. The downside of that is I never got the option to mix and match my own teams. The players are set for each and you just have to go with it.
Also, sadly, despite being the Switch version, the game is indeed still censored. There is no more Purging Mini Game (Sorry Charlotte fans. Would've been great, right?). I don't blame the developer, but man does it suck. Probably the worst part of the whole thing. Even some of the Blood Skelter forms have been covered up! And the transformation goes by in a blink of an eye (thanks recording option on Switch!). It only really upsets me because they were so cool and beautiful in Mary Skelter 2. It got me excited for Finale's version, but alas, disappointment.
The dungeons themselves are actually quite impressive and well layed out. There aren't as many as before, but they are HUGE. The puzzles aren't as good as the second game, but aren't a hassle to get through like the first. Nightmares are a bit disappointing this time, however, and this is because of two major issues. One, they aren't voiced. No longer am I hearing them growl, roar, hiss, moan, etc. Not even during a chase sequence. I'm not sure if it's because I'm on Switch, but the Jail and Nightmares are dead silent. You couldn't go two steps in the other games without hearing them, so why not here? Second reason, the chase music is too good. I know, that sounds weird, but the music that plays when a Nightmare is in hot pursuit of you just gets me pumped up instead of fleeing in fear. I actually forgot I was being chased one time when I saw a treasure chest and got stuck because the music was just too catchy. I still think the first game had the best chase music; I actually felt fear while running!
With that said, Finale has the BEST overall music in the series, especially when it comes to battle! My head was bopping and I was shaking with glee as I did battle with the enemy. It really rouses you and is just great to listen to by itself.
Storywise, eh, it's okay. Everything gets explained well enough eventually, things layed out early are used in the end, and Phoenix Wright fans like me will pretty much call out every plot reveal LOOOOONG before the game does. This doesn't make it bad, but it does make it predictable. Luckily, the writing, humor, and drama I've come to love from Mary Skelter shines through on a number of occasions. The only real downside is the pacing. You'll go through a LOT of story, then a LOT of dungeon crawling, then repeat that for the whole game. It's not a little here, a little there like the other games. A lot of characters were also introduced here, but hardly got any screentime. I was really hoping for a LOT more Mary and Charlotte, but they're kind of just... there. A lot of other returning characters also get less than disserved story coverage. HOWEVER, the end (Finale if you will) is well worth it! Especially if you've played the first two games and got the True End endings. This game knows how to treat its fans, both for the gameplay and characters. I was on the floor BAWLING my eyes out when that final credits rolled! It was then I knew, I absolutely loved this series! And it's a shame there won't be more. The next step would be to immortalize it all in a wonderful anime series. One season per game, if you please.
Now, that I'm done going through it, I find myself still coming back to it. I don't know what it is that makes me do so. Maybe my desire for more, maybe I'll try Fear mode, or play dress up and challenge myself with all the different outfits. Either way, I'm glad I got to experience this unique take on the dungeon crawler genre. Keep it up Compile Heart and Idea Factory. Your games have yet to disappoint me!
